De Rabo de Puerco a Puerto Armuelles

Our town of Puerto Armuelles was once known as Rabo de Puerco. One of the reasons it was called that was because the path of a river running through town resembled a pig's tail. Another reason it was called that was because this area was once used primarily for hog farming.

UNITED FRUIT COMPANY IN PUERTO ARMUELLES

In 1927 the name was changed to Puerto Armuelles. In the next year the United Fruit Company now known as Chiquita came to Puerto Armuelles. When they came they built and managed schools, houses, public utilities, and even a dry goods store.

They built different neighborhoods ranging from low paying workers to high paid administrative workers. For the high paid workers their neighborhood was called Las Palmas the same name as our Schools. For the low paid and middle waged workers Silver City and Spanish Town. There are also houses for workers in the farms. Also they built our school in 1928, for the children of company workers, but then around the 70´s the school was opened for the children of non company workers.

Now our province economy relies heavily on the exportation of bananas and cattle farming.
Although right now in our district we are suffering an economic depression. That is due to the poor financial status of Chiquita Banana. Just recently this area has been hit by a number of massive layoffs.
